For the first six months of life, babies will fall asleep pretty much anywhere, any time. Our John Ryan By Design Cot mattress is suitable for a baby or young child up to around 16kg in weight or years of age. Premature babies seem to have much more dream sleep than babies born at term and the amount of dream sleep declines in all babies over the first year of life.

What can I do if my baby gets upset? Moving your baby from your bed to sleeping alone in a cot can be a challenge, but it is possible. A lot depends on your baby's age.

Bear in mind that it's best for your baby to sleep in the same room as you for his first six months. Your baby's wriggling and noisy breathing may be keeping you or your partner awake at night. Or perhaps having him in your bed every night is starting to affect your relationship. These are both good reasons to make the transition. The younger your baby is, the easier the process will probably be.

  • The move from your bed to his cot may take as little as a few days or as long as a few months, depending on how long he's been sleeping with you. What approach should I try?

  • You can make the move easier for you both with these approaches. If your baby is very young, you could try moving him to a Moses basket or a carry cot before moving him to his big cot.

If your baby is six months or older: Try putting the cot alongside your bed with the mattress at the same height as your mattress, so your baby can still see you. Sleep with your baby in his bedroom.

He may complain about his new sleeping place, but having you nearby will make it easier for him at first. Get your baby used to sleeping in his cot or bed during his daytime naps.

Give your baby lots of comfort while he moves to his own bedroom. But once he's finally settled in his own room all night, try not to bring him back to your bed as it could confuse him. It's up to you and your partner to decide when it's time for your baby to move to his own cot.
